When Moms Gather: Finding Hope, Help, and Each Other in the Journey Through Autism

When we gather, we heal. This quarters’s Mom’s Chat was more than a conversation, it was a safe haven. A circle of powerful, vulnerable, resilient women came together not just to share their stories, but to offer each other something even more valuable: connection.

Each mom brought her own unique journey, some in the thick of diagnosis, others navigating puberty, behavioral challenges, expressive language delays, or the tangled web of insurance and therapy waitlists. But in every story, there was something deeper than the details: a steady current of strength and determination.

The Realities We Carry

Moms shared stories of their children being misunderstood by schools, rejected by programs, or overlooked by doctors. Some had children with co-occurring diagnoses, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, anxiety, or language disorders - fighting for a proper diagnosis for years. Others spoke about the weight of watching their children struggle with self-regulation, emotional outbursts, and developmental delays.

Several shared how hard it was to get family members on board, to understand that what they’re facing isn’t a phase or a parenting style. Many have faced judgment, isolation, and even loss of family support due to denial or misunderstanding.

And yet, they showed up, for themselves, for each other, and for their kids.

Themes That Emerged

🧬 Genetic Testing & Diagnosis Journey
Many moms expressed confusion or frustration about how to begin the diagnostic process, especially when their children masked well in school or didn’t meet every checkbox. Others shared how much persistence it took to get medical professionals to listen and take their concerns seriously.

🗣️ Expressive Language & Communication Tools
AAC devices, speech therapy, and visual aids came up often. Some kids are nonverbal, others struggle to put thoughts into words, and many parents said it’s hard to know if they're doing too much, or not enough.

🚽 Potty Training
This was a universal stressor, each family’s timeline looked different, but the process was deeply emotional. Wins were celebrated, and setbacks were validated with compassion.

🌙 Sleep, Safety, & Medication
From natural supplements to prescription options, the group exchanged tips on transitions and managing side effects. Sleep challenges were common, with families constantly troubleshooting nighttime routines.

👧🏽 Girls on the Spectrum
Several moms shared how difficult it was to get a diagnosis for their daughters due to masking or outdated stereotypes. These girls were often misread as "quirky" or "shy", until families pushed for thorough evaluations.

❤️ Siblings & Family Dynamics
Finding balance between all children in the home is a consistent challenge. Some siblings feel left out, others step into caretaker roles too early. Moms expressed interest in sibling support programs like Sit Shop or inclusive sports leagues that celebrate all abilities.

📅 The Need for a Summer Calendar
Without structured school days, many parents felt overwhelmed trying to fill the time. Ideas for inclusive programs, ABA-friendly activities, and parent/caregiver self-care were requested.

What We Learned From Each Other

At the core of every update, whether it was about a therapy breakthrough or a sleepless night, was the reminder that everyone's path is different. Some kids speak early, others don’t. Some are in private schools, others need home support or specialized programs. Some families have robust support systems; others feel isolated.

And yet, what brings these moms together is not how their journeys differ, but how deeply they understand the importance of walking them side by side.

Takeaways From the Heart

💬 “Grateful for the hard obstacles.”
These challenges teach us what matters most. They stretch our patience, deepen our empathy, and sharpen our advocacy.

💬 “Hold onto hope, the outcome is worth it.”
There were tears, yes. But also laughter. And so many moments of, “Me too.” These moms reminded each other that hope is a muscle we build together.

💬 “Community is so helpful.”
Whether you’re new to this journey or 10 years in, community reminds you that you’re not alone. You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

💬 “Create relationships with other caregivers.”
The best resources aren’t always found on websites, they’re found in the wisdom of another parent who’s been where you are.

💬 “You are your child’s advocate.”
No one knows your child better. No one will fight harder. And when you speak up, you inspire others to do the same.

💬 “It might get harder before it gets easier - but think about the long run.”
Progress isn’t linear. There will be setbacks. But the gains, however small, are worth every ounce of effort.

💬 “Everyone has a different path.”
There is no single “right way.” Trust your instincts. Adapt as needed. Let go of comparison.

Final Thoughts

The power of this chat wasn’t just in the shared stories, it was in the courage it took to tell them. To the moms who joined us: thank you. For being raw. For showing up. For building the kind of community that makes the hard days a little softer.

Together, we will keep learning, growing, and showing up, for our kids and for each other.
